What is RM?
RMVB (Real Media Video) is a multimedia container format capable of storing
audio and video data. The newest version of RealPlayer can play any RealVideo
file. Other programs may not support all video compression formats. As
these formats had been described in detail in various technical papers
and standards documents, it was possible to write software capable of playing
RealAudio based on this information. RealNetworks says that the RealVideo
and RealAudio codecs are not available in source code under the RPSL license.
Source code is available only under RCSL license for commercial porting
to non-supported processors and operating systems. RealAudio was heavily
used by the BBC websites until 2009, though was it discontinued due to
its declining use. BBC World Service, the last of the BBC websites to use
RealAudio, discontinued its usage in March 2011. In many cases, web pages
do not link directly to a RealAudio file. Instead, they link to a .ram
(Real Audio Metadata) or SMIL file. This is a small text file containing
a link to the audio stream. The first version of RealVideo was announced
in 1997 and was based on the H.263 format. At the time, RealNetworks issued
a press release saying they had licensed Iterated Systems' ClearVideo technology
and were including it as the RealVideo Fractal Codec. However, support
for ClearVideo quietly disappeared in the next version of RealVideo. RMVB
allows your computer to save bandwidth on video scenes that don't use a
lot of it and use more on scenes that do. Using HTTP streaming works best
with pre-recorded files so some alternative protocols have been developed
which work better for live broadcasts.
What is Xvid?
Xvid (formerly "XviD") is a video codec library following the
MPEG-4 standard, specifically MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile (ASP).
For example, Xvid specifies three warp points for its implementation of
global motion compensation as opposed to the single warp point implementation
of DivX. Enabling some of the more advanced encoding features can compromise
player compatibility. There are a number of reasons for using XviD: XviD
is free, and can be obtained free of charge and is shipped together with
many hardware devices; While being free, XviD offers outstanding quality
and performance clearly surprising expensive, competing products; XviD
allows you to create video for interoperable exchange with portable or
home multimedia devices as XviD is widely supported in hardware; Being
open-source, XviD is future-proof and secure to use. Sigma Designs was
contacted and confirmed that a programmer had based REALmagic on Xvid,
but assured that all GPL code would be replaced to avoid copyright infringement.
XviD-compressed videos can be 200 times smaller than the source video,
with the visual quality well intact. XviD, as a file type, is an AVI file
with video encoded with XviD codec. Xvid is Free Software and released
under the GNU GPL license. This means that the source code of the software
is publically available and programmers are allowed to make modifications
to the code. Also, redistribution of Xvid is permitted but only under the
terms of the GPL license. Since it featured many patented technologies,
Xvid 0.9.x versions were confronted with license barriers in some countries.
Xvid does not spy on you, is totally ad-free and does not transmit any
of your data behind your back. Since the source code of Xvid is available
to the public, everyone can check for themselves and see that there's no
malicious code in Xvid. This constant review by independent third parties
makes Xvid really safe to use.
