What is DAT?
Video CD (VCD) MPEG-1 movie file. Windows Media Player prior to version 9 and QuickTime Player do not support playing VCD directly, though they can play the .DAT files (stored under MPEGAV for video and audio data) reliably, and plugins were available. The disc format is also supported using Windows Media Player Classic variations and VLC Media Player both support VCDs natively. Audio specifications: Codec: MPEG-1 Audio Layer II; Frequency: 44,100 hertz (44.1 kHz); Output: Dual channel or stereo; Bitrate: 224 kilobits per second; Rate Control: Constant bitrate. Overall picture quality is intended to be comparable to VHS video. Video specifications: Codec: MPEG-1; Resolution: 352x240 (NTSC), 352x288 (PAL/SECAM); Aspect Ratio: 4:3 (NTSC), 4:3 (PAL/SECAM); Framerate: 29.97 or 23.976 frames per second (NTSC), 25 frames per second (PAL/SECAM); Bitrate: 1,150 kilobits per second; Rate Control: constant bitrate. 352x240 (or SIF) resolution was chosen because it is half the vertical, and half the horizontal resolution of NTSC video. VCD video is mostly compatible with the DVD-Video standard, except for any video encoded at 23.976 frames per second, which must use 3:2 pulldown. In a VCD, the audio and video streams are multiplexed in an MPEG program stream (MPEG-PS) container. Similarly, the audio frequency range is limited to those sounds most clearly heard by the human ear. Although many DVD video players support playback of VCDs, VCD video is only compatible with the DVD-Video standard if encoded at 29.97 frames per second or 25 frames per second. VCDs are playable in dedicated VCD players, most DVD-Video players, personal computers, and some video game consoles.

What is MKV?
MKV is a flexible, open standard video file format that has quickly become the preferred file extension for high definition video on the Internet. MKV founder Steve Lhomme left the project after disagreeing with the MCF project leader Lasse Karkkainen regarding using the Extensible Binary Metal Language (EBML) over another format. One MKV file can hold an unlimited number of audio, video, and subtitle tracks. Matroska aims to become THE standard of multimedia container formats. It natively supports features like alternate audio tracks, multilingual subtitles and chapter points, as well as rich metadata authoring including cover art, ratings, descriptions and more. This format is currently not supported by all operating systems or multimedia software and requires the latest codec packs installed in order to view the files. The software used for building the files is free for public distribution and use, and the developers have created tools to help create and edit MKV files. Files are store in .MKV file extensions. The project was announced on 6 December 2002 as a fork of the Multimedia Container Format (MCF), after disagreements between MCF lead developer Lasse K?rkk?inen and soon-to-be Matroska founder Steve Lhomme about the use of the Extensible Binary Meta Language (EBML) instead of a binary format. The Matroska developers are also continually working along with hardware producers to include MKV support in multimedia software typically included with new computers and support in a variety of operating systems.
