What is FLV?
Flash Videos, or FLVs, are one of the most common video formats on the
Internet. Most streaming video sites encode their media as FLVs. For example,
F4V does not support Screen video, Sorenson Spark, VP6 video compression
formats and ADPCM, Nellymoser audio compression formats. FLV, also known
as Flash video, is the standard for many news and video-sharing websites
thanks to its small file sizes and versatility. FLV was originally developed
by Macromedia. Both formats are supported in Adobe Flash Player and currently
developed by Adobe Systems. The latter F4V file format is based on the
ISO base media file format and is supported starting with Flash Player
9 update 3. The Flash Video FLV file format supports two versions of a
so called 'screenshare' (Screen video) codec which is an encoding format
designed for screencasts. Both these formats are bitmap tile based, can
be lossy by reducing color depths and are compressed using zlib. The second
version is only playable in Flash Player 8 and newer. FLV files also support
uncompressed audio or ADPCM format audio. Flash Player does not check the
extension of the file, but rather looks inside the file to detect which
format it is. It is the required video compression format for Flash Player
6 and 7. The format has quickly established itself as the format of choice
for embedded video on the web. In 2003, Flash Player 7 added direct support
for FLV file format. Supported media types in F4V file format: Video: H.264;
Images (still frame of video data): GIF, PNG, JPEG; Audio: AAC, HE-AAC,
MP3. The new file formats are completely different from the older FLV file
format. One way to feed data to Flash Media Server is from files in the
FLV file format.
What is WebM?
WebM defines the file container structure, video and audio formats. WebM
files consist of video streams compressed with the VP8 video codec and
audio streams compressed with the Vorbis audio codec. The WebM file structure
is based on the Matroska container. VP8 is a highly efficient video compression
technology that was developed by On2 Technologies. Google acquired On2
in February, 2010. For more information, see the -VP8 Video Codec"
section below. WebM Project licenses VP8 hardware accelerators (RTL IP)
to semiconductor companies for 1080p encoding and decoding at zero cost.
AMD, ARM and Broadcom have announced support for hardware acceleration
of the WebM format. Intel is also considering hardware-based acceleration
for WebM in its Atom-based TV chips if the format gains popularity. Qualcomm
and Texas Instruments have announced support, with native support coming
to the TI OMAP processor. Chip&Media have announced a fully hardware
decoder for VP8 that can decode full HD resolution VP8 streams at 60 frames
per second. VP8's highly efficient bandwidth usage and lower storage requirements
can help publishers recognize immediate cost savings. Also, the relative
simplicity of VP8 makes it easy to integrate into existing environments
and requires comparatively little manual tuning in the encoder to produce
high-quality results. Google acquired ON2, the original developer of VP8
technology. VP8 is now an open and free technology. A WebM file consists
of VP8 video and Vorbis audio streams, in a container based on a profile
of Matroska. Android is WebM-enabled since version 2.3 - Gingerbread, which
was first made available via the Nexus S mobile phone.
