What is DVR-MS?
DVR-MS (Microsoft Digital Video Recording) is a proprietary video and audio
file container format, developed by Microsoft used for storing TV content
recorded by Windows XP Media Center Edition, Windows Vista and Windows
7. DVR-MS files have Digital Video Recording (DVR) functions, which includes
pausing of live television, recording television programs and other DVR
capabilities. For older Windows operating systems, any third-party media
player which supports the DVR-MS format through DirectShow on Windows or
by other means on Windows or other platforms can be used for playback.
Files in this format are generated from the Stream Buffer Engine (SBE.dll),
a DirectShow component introduced in Windows XP Service Pack 1. Audio and
video are wrapped in an ASF container with the extension DVR-MS. DRM, or
digital rights management, is the term to describe restricting or limiting
the use of digital content and digital devices. Unprotected DVR-MS files
(files not marked in this way) can be played back on any device running
Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or later Windows operating systems, hotfix
810243 for Windows XP RTM (which adds DVR-MS support to DirectShow), and
on Windows Mobile 6. Some universal transcoders may be able to convert
DVR-MS to other formats. Both the audio and video components of DVR-MS
files rely on MPEG codecs, but unlike MPEG files, DVR-MS files are not
widely recognized in computer programs. The Windows Media Center can be
used to capture television programming, which can be edited to delete commercials,

codec delivers high-quality video while efficiently adapting to varying
processing and bandwidth conditions across a broad range of devices. Adobe
Systems announced that its Flash Player will be updated to support WebM,
but no exact date was specified for its addition. Logitech is planning
to use WebM as part of a video calling service. A WebM file consists of
VP8 video and Vorbis audio streams, in a container based on a profile of
Matroska. VP8 is a highly efficient video compression technology that was
developed by On2 Technologies. Google acquired On2 in February, 2010. For

Media's online encoding platform now supports VP8 and WebM. Google acquired
ON2, the original developer of VP8 technology. VP8 is now an open and free
technology. Also ST-Ericsson and Huawei have hardware implementations in
their computer chips. Android is WebM-enabled since version 2.3 - Gingerbread,
which was first made available via the Nexus S mobile phone. Skype has
implemented the VP8 codec into the Skype 5.0 software. WebM Project licenses
VP8 hardware accelerators (RTL IP) to semiconductor companies for 1080p
encoding and decoding at zero cost. AMD, ARM and Broadcom have announced
support for hardware acceleration of the WebM format. Intel is also considering
hardware-based acceleration for WebM in its Atom-based TV chips if the
format gains popularity. Qualcomm and Texas Instruments have announced
support, with native support coming to the TI OMAP processor. Chip&Media
have announced a fully hardware decoder for VP8 that can decode full HD
resolution VP8 streams at 60 frames per second.
