What is EVO?
HD-DVD and BlueRay enhanced VOB file format. A secondary soundtrack, if
present, can be stored in any of the aforementioned formats, or in one
of the HD DVD optional codecs: DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and DTS-HD
Master Audio. A wide variety of resolutions are supported, from low-resolution
CIF, all SDTV resolutions supported by DVD-Video, and HDTV formats: 720p,
1080i, and 1080p. The vast majority of releases were encoded with VC-1,
and most of the remaining titles encoded with AVC. The storage size also
varies: A dual-layer HD DVD holds a maximum of 30 GB of data, while a dual-layer
Blu-ray Disc carries 50 GB. It is an extension to VOB, which is an extension
to MPEG-2 Program stream. Because all variants except 3* DVD and HD REC
employed a blue laser with a shorter wavelength, HD DVD could store about
3.2 times as much data per layer as its predecessor (maximum capacity:
15 GB per layer instead of 4.7 GB per layer). EVO files can contain video
encoded in H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, VC-1, or MPEG-2 and audio encoded in AC-3,
E-AC-3, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS-HD, PCM, and MPEG-2. As with previous optical
disc formats, HD DVD supports several file systems, such as ISO 9660 and
Universal Disk Format (UDF). The extensions are in the form of private
stream data and their interpretation. It contains the actual video, audio,
subtitle and menu contents in stream form. Third-party player software
for Windows and Linux have successfully played HD DVD titles using the
add-on drive. All HD DVD titles use UDF version 2.5 as the file system.
In this file system, multiplexed audio and video streams are stored in
EVO container format. HD DVD competed primarily with Blu-ray Disc. Both
formats were designed as successors to DVD, capable of higher quality video
and audio playback, and of greater capacity when used to store video, audio,
and computer data.
What is WebM?
WebM is an open, royalty-free, media file format designed for the web.
WebM Project licenses VP8 hardware accelerators (RTL IP) to semiconductor
companies for 1080p encoding and decoding at zero cost. AMD, ARM and Broadcom
have announced support for hardware acceleration of the WebM format. Intel
is also considering hardware-based acceleration for WebM in its Atom-based
TV chips if the format gains popularity. Qualcomm and Texas Instruments
have announced support, with native support coming to the TI OMAP processor.
Chip&Media have announced a fully hardware decoder for VP8 that can
decode full HD resolution VP8 streams at 60 frames per second. Logitech
is planning to use WebM as part of a video calling service. VP8's highly
efficient bandwidth usage and lower storage requirements can help publishers
recognize immediate cost savings. Also, the relative simplicity of VP8
makes it easy to integrate into existing environments and requires comparatively
little manual tuning in the encoder to produce high-quality results. Adobe
Systems announced that its Flash Player will be updated to support WebM,
but no exact date was specified for its addition. MPC-HC as of SVN 2071
and higher builds supports WebM playback with internal VP8 decoder based
on FFmpeg's code. The full decoding support for WebM is available in MPC-HC
since version 1.4.2499.0. Native WebM support by Mozilla Firefox, Opera,
and Google Chrome was announced at the 2010 Google I/O conference. Internet
Explorer 9 requires third-party WebM software. Safari for Windows and Mac
OS X relies on QuickTime to play web media, which as of 1 April 2011, does
not support WebM unless a third-party plug-in is installed.
