What is FLV?
Flash Videos, or FLVs, are one of the most common video formats on the
Internet. Most streaming video sites encode their media as FLVs. SWF files
published for Flash Player 6 and later versions are able to exchange audio,
video, and data over RTMP connections with the Adobe Flash Media Server.
Audio in Flash Video files is usually encoded as MP3. However, audio in
Flash Video FLV files recorded from the user's microphone use the proprietary
Nellymoser Asao Codec. (Flash Player 10 released in 2008 also supports
the open source Speex codec.) FLV (flash video), on the other hand, is
a format mainly designed for Web payback using the Adobe Flash Player because
it supports high-rate video compressions. Support for encoding Flash Video
files is provided by an encoding tool included with Adobe's Flash Professional
and Creative Suite products, On2's Flix encoding tools, Sorenson Squeeze,
FFmpeg and other third party tools. The new file formats are completely
different from the older FLV file format. Supported media types in FLV
file format: Video: On2 VP6, Sorenson Spark (Sorenson H.263), Screen video,
H.264; Audio: MP3, ADPCM, Linear PCM, Nellymoser, Speex, AAC, G.711 (reserved
for internal use). Flash-compatible video file exported by the Flash Video
Exporter plug-in (included with Adobe Flash) or other program with FLV
file support; consists of a short header, interleaved audio, video, and
metadata packets; audio and video data is stored in a similar format used
by standard Flash (.SWF) files. The format has quickly established itself
as the format of choice for embedded video on the web. Macromedia was acquired
by Adobe in 2005, so Macromedia Flash Player is now Adobe Flash Player.
What is MOV?
MOV is a file extension used by the QuickTime-wrapped files. The format
was created by Apple Computer to work with multimedia files. The .mov file
format is a common video file used by both Mac and PC computers. QuickTime
is an extensible multimedia framework developed by Apple Inc., capable
of handling various formats of digital video, picture, sound, panoramic
images, and interactivity. Quicktime files combine sound, text, animation,
and video in a single file. MOV files, or QuickTime Movies, are digital
videos stored in the codec developed by Apple Computers. Using a Quicktime
player that either comes with a Web browser or can be downloaded from Apple
or the browser company, you can view and control brief multimedia sequences.
With additional QuickTime Components, it can also support ASF, DivX Media
Format, Flash Video, Matroska, Ogg, and many others. Quicktime is a multimedia
development, storage, and playback technology from Apple. Other media programs
and digital devices, including Windows Media Player and many digital cameras,
also use the format to store video files. A file that has a .mov extension
means that it is in the QuickTime file format. QuickTime is bundled with
Mac OS X. QuickTime for Microsoft Windows has always been downloadable
as a standalone installation, as well as being bundled with Apple's iTunes.
A .mov video file is in the default format for all Mac computers. QuickTime
was developed by Apple for use as a standard media application for the
Mac operating system. Tracks are maintained in a hierarchical data structure
consisting of objects called atoms. An atom can be a parent to other atoms
or it can contain media or edit data, but it cannot do both.
