What is MKV?
Matroska Video files (MKV) are open source container video files that can
hold a limitless number of audio, video and subtitle tracks in one file.
As the name implies (the Russian egg-shaped dolls contained within one
another) Matroska can contain video (DivX, Xvid, RV9, etc), sound (MP3,
MP2, Ogg, AC3, AAC, DTS, PCM), as well as subtitles (SRT, ASS, SSA, USF,
etc) in the same file. Also, not all media players can play this format,
even with the codec pack installed. Codec, as a word is an abbreviation
of Coder / Decoder. The video stream located in the MKV file has been "coded"
by the source and now it must be "decoded" by the end user who
wishes to play it. Matroska is not a video codec as it is often thought
to be, but a container, or an envelope that can hold many different codecs
at the same time. The name and logo can be used without permission in non-commercial
contexts; however, for commercial use the development group asks that companies
contact them for permission. There is just one hitch - there is no standalone
hardware player that is capable of playing MKV files. MKV files contain
video and audio streams (may also contain subtitles). The streams are likely
compressed and have been produced with an encoder. In order to play these
streams a codec is required. In addition to that, there are also free parsing
and playback libraries available under the BSD license, for commercial
software and Hardware adoption. The Matroska name and logo use do have
some restrictions based on the specific circumstances. Matroska is rapidly
gaining ground as a popular video format mainly because of its advanced
features.
What is H.264?
H.264 is a codec used to create MP4 files. Its wide compatibility and range
of features has made it a popular encoder for videos. Also known as AVC
(Advanced Video Coding, MPEG-4 Part 10), H.264 is actually defined in an
identical pair of standards maintained by different organizations, together
known as the Joint Video Team (JVT). The Scalable Video Coding extensions
were completed in November 2007. In December 2001, VCEG and the Moving
Picture Experts Group (MPEG - ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 11) formed a Joint
Video Team (JVT), with the charter to finalize the video coding standard.
In early 1998, the Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG - ITU-T SG16 Q.6) issued
a call for proposals on a project called H.26L, with the target to double
the coding efficiency (which means halving the bit rate necessary for a
given level of fidelity) in comparison to any other existing video coding
standards for a broad variety of applications. The maximum bit rate for
High Profile is 1.25 times that of the Base/Extended/Main Profiles, 3 times
for Hi10P, and 4 times for Hi422P/Hi444PP. Formal approval of the specification
came in March 2003. Standardising video compression makes it possible for
products from different manufacturers such as encoders, decoders and storage
media to inter-operate. H.264/AVC/MPEG-4 Part 10 contains a number of new
features that allow it to compress video much more effectively than older
standards and to provide more flexibility for application to a wide variety
of network environments. The CCTV (Closed Circuit TV) and Video Surveillance
markets have included the technology in many products. The H.264 standard
can be viewed as a "family of standards", the members of which
are the profiles described below.
