What is M2TS?
M2TS files are video files from Sony high-definition digital video cameras.
M2TS format from Sony is not necessarily the same as that of Panasonic
or Canon camcorders. On August 2012, VLC media player 2.0.1 could convert
.m2ts files into MP4 as well. DVDFab (at least premium) can also convert
.m2ts to various other formats, including .mkv or .mp4. The M2TS file extension
is used to distribute digital video saved in the high-definition Blu-ray
BDAV format. Blu-ray Disc software players can usually play back encrypted
content from original disc. The BDAV container is also used in the BDAV
(Blu-ray Disc Audio/Visual) disc format, the consumer-oriented alternative
to the BDMV discs. Compared to Blu-ray Disc format, AVCHD can use various
storage media, such as DVD media, memory cards or hard disk drives. This
container format is commonly used for high definition video on Blu-ray
Disc and AVCHD. The BDAV container contains videos recorded using AVCHD
camcorders, such as Sony's HDR-SR(xx)series models. The names of M2TS files
are in the form "zzzzz.m2ts", where "zzzzz" is a 5-digit
number corresponding to the audiovisual clip. Files in AVCHD format use
legacy "8.3" file naming convention, while Blu-ray Discs use
long filenames. That's why the filename extension of video files is ".MTS"
instead of Blu-ray Disc's ".m2ts". Also other files use different
extensions: .CPI - .clpi, .MPL - .mpls, .BDM - .bdmv. The BDAV container
format (.m2ts) is a standard used on Blu-ray Discs. This number is also
used in the filename of an associated clip information file "zzzzz.clpi".
(This number can be a date and time stamp of when the video clip was recorded.)
Each stream has its own file.
What is 3GP?
3GP is a multimedia container format defined by the Third Generation Partnership
Project (3GPP) for use on 3G mobile phones but can also be played on some
2G and 4G phones. 3GPP is worldwide standard for the creation, delivery
and playback of multimedia over 3rd generation, high-speed wireless networks.
The 3GP file format stores video streams as MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 or MPEG-4
Part 10 (AVC/H.264), and audio streams as AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AMR-WB+, AAC-LC,
HE-AAC v1 or Enhanced aacPlus (HE-AAC v2). A 3GP file is always big-endian,
storing and transferring the most significant bytes first. The 3GP file
type is primarily associated with '3GPP'. Most 3G capable mobile phones
support the playback and recording of video in 3GP format (memory, maximum
filesize for playback and recording, and resolution limits exist and vary).
Defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project and 3rd Generation Partnership
Project 2 respectively, these standards seek to provide uniform delivery
of rich multimedia over newly evolved, broadband mobile networks (3rd generation
networks) to the latest multimedia-enabled wireless devices. Some newer/higher-end
phones without 3G capabilities may also playback and record in this format
(again, with said limitations). Some cell phones use the .mp4 extension
for 3GP video. Designed as a multimedia format for transmitting audio and
video files between 3G cell phones and over the Internet; commonly used
by mobile phones that support video capture. 3GPP file format was designed
for GSM-based Phones and may have the filename extension ".3gp".
Audio imported from CD onto a PlayStation 3 when it is set to encode to
the MPEG-4 AAC codec will copy onto USB devices in the 3GP format.
