What is M4V?
An M4V file is a type of MPEG-4 video file, largely used by Apple in its
iTunes store. However, unprotected M4V files without AC3 audio may be recognized
and played by other video players by changing the file extension from ".m4v"
to ".mp4". Besides Apple iTunes and Apple QuickTime Player, M4V
files can also be opened and played with Media Player Classic, RealPlayer,
VLC media player, DivX Plus Player, and Nero Showtime (included with Nero
Multimedia Suite). M4V is a Mac-based file extension used in the iTunes
store. If you download any videos from iTunes, it will have the M4V extension.
Although many iTunes videos are made freely available, some require purchase
before they can be downloaded. MPEG-4 is a multimedia container format.
To play a protected M4V file, your computer must be authorized (using iTunes)
with the account that was used to purchase the video. Embedding an M4V
video in a site adds interest and draws visitors' attention. The M4V is
a standard format and is used on a variety of other products. It can also
be played with the BS Player Pro. The differences are the optional Apple's
DRM copyright protection, and the treatment of AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio
which is not standardized for the MP4 container. It is also playable by
the Android operating system with its video player. The format, with DRM
removed, can also be played in the webOS Video Player for use on the Palm
Pre, Palm Pixi smartphones. The copyright of M4V files may be protected
by using Apple's FairPlay DRM copyright protection. It is most commonly
used to store digital audio and digital video streams, but can also be
used to store other data such as subtitles and still images.
What is WebM?
WebM defines the file container structure, video and audio formats. WebM
files consist of video streams compressed with the VP8 video codec and
audio streams compressed with the Vorbis audio codec. The WebM file structure
is based on the Matroska container. WebM is an alternative to the patented
h.264 and MPEG4 standards, and is suitable for commercial and non-commercial
applications. Also ST-Ericsson and Huawei have hardware implementations
in their computer chips. In mid-2010, Simon Phipps, a board member for
the Open Source Initiative, expressed doubts as to whether the original
WebM license was an open-source license, since it had not been submitted
to the OSI for approval. NVIDIA has stated that they support VP8 adoption,
but they have no specific plans to provide hardware support. Some video
codecs require content distributors and manufacturers to pay patent royalties
to use the intellectual property within the codec. WebM and the codecs
it supports (VP8 video and Vorbis audio) require no royalty payments of
any kind. You can do whatever you want with the WebM code without owing
money to anybody. A WebM file consists of VP8 video and Vorbis audio streams,
in a container based on a profile of Matroska. Google acquired ON2, the
original developer of VP8 technology. VP8 is now an open and free technology.
Native WebM support by Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Google Chrome was announced
at the 2010 Google I/O conference. Internet Explorer 9 requires third-party
WebM software. Safari for Windows and Mac OS X relies on QuickTime to play
web media, which as of 1 April 2011, does not support WebM unless a third-party
plug-in is installed.
