What is M2TS?
The M2TS file format is used to encode digital video that is formatted
onto Blu-ray DVDs. Since an M2TS file is compressed with an MPEG-2 video
file, it can essentially be treated and distributed as any other digital
video file. This number is also used in the filename of an associated clip
information file "zzzzz.clpi". (This number can be a date and
time stamp of when the video clip was recorded.) Each stream has its own
file. Some players will need an appropriate codec, component or plugin
installed. Blu-ray Disc software players can usually play back encrypted
content from original disc. This container format is commonly used for
high definition video on Blu-ray Disc and AVCHD. The M2TS file extension
is used to distribute digital video saved in the high-definition Blu-ray
BDAV format. Software that supports M2TS files usually works only with
decrypted or unencrypted files. The M2TS format is used for compressing
video data onto Blu-ray discs. They can essentially be distributed and
opened as individual video files since M2TS files contain an MPEG-2 video
codec. Current versions of Nero Vision, FormatFactory, Total video converter,
MediaCoder, HandBrake and Picture Motion Browser are capable of converting
M2TS files into MPEG-4 files, which can also be viewed using the aforementioned
media players. The .M2TS files contain a BDAV MPEG-2 transport stream.
Each stream has its own file and their names are of the form #####.M2TS
(a five-digit number followed by .M2TS). Files with the same number are
related. Compared to Blu-ray Disc format, AVCHD can use various storage
media, such as DVD media, memory cards or hard disk drives.
What is Xvid?
XviD is an open source MPEG-4 video codec library distributed under the
terms of the GNU General Public License. Besides storage and archival purposes,
Xvid is also always useful where video shall be transmitted over a network,
e.g. in case you want to share one of your videos with your friends via
the internet. Compressing such video with Xvid dramatically reduces download
times and expensive traffic while retaining high quality. When Sigma Designs
released the supposedly rewritten REALmagic codec, the Xvid developers

due to concerns over patents, the official Xvid web site does not provide
binary versions of the Xvid codec. However, it does link to supporting
web sites that provide Video for Windows codecs (and DirectShow decoding
filters) for Microsoft Windows. Xvid does not spy on you, is totally ad-free
and does not transmit any of your data behind your back. Since the source
code of Xvid is available to the public, everyone can check for themselves
and see that there's no malicious code in Xvid. This constant review by
independent third parties makes Xvid really safe to use. Xvid uses ASP
features such as b-frames, global and quarter pixel motion compensation,
lumi masking, trellis quantization, and H.263, MPEG and custom quantization
matrices. The XviD codec makes it possible to compress a full-length DVD-quality
movie enough to fit on a single CD (might require 2 CDs depending on the
length of the movie), while still maintaining the original image quality.
Despite the fact that XviD movies offer higher quality video at smaller
file sizes they take less time to encode than MPEG-2 due to the incredible
compression technology.
