What is MKV?
The Matroska Multimedia Container is an open standard, free container format,
a file format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture, or
subtitle tracks in one file. It is a universal format for storing common
multimedia content, like movies or TV shows. MKV founder Steve Lhomme left the project after disagreeing
with the MCF project leader Lasse Karkkainen regarding using the Extensible
Binary Metal Language (EBML) over another format. The aim of developing
Matroska was to provide a flexible and cross-platform alternative to AVI,
ASF, MP4, MPG, MOV, and RM. Files are store in .MKV file extensions. Matroska
is an open standards project. This means for personal use it is absolutely
free to use and that the technical specifications describing the bitstream
are open to everybody, even to companies that would like to support it
in their products. Also, not all media players can play this format, even
with the codec pack installed. The following media players have been tested
and proved by Matroska to support MKV files: ALShow, Avidemux, BS Player,
Chameleo, The Core Media Player, Core Player Mobile, The Core Pocket Media
Player, foobar2000, GOM Player, Gstreamer-based Players, Handbrake, jetAudio,
Kaffeine, The KMPlayer, Media Player Classic, Media Player Classic - Home
Cinema, MediaPortal, Mezzmo Media Player, MPlayer, MythTV, Perian Quicktime
Plugin for Mac OS X, Target Longlife Media Player, Totem Movie Player,
VirtualDubMod, VLC media player, VSO, Vuze Media Player, Windows Media
Player 11, xine, Zoom Player, plexapp, and XBMC.
What is Xvid?
Xvid is a video codec that is used in many video compression formats such
as Audio Video Interleave (AVI). Xvid encoded AVI video files supports
high quality compressions with fast encoding speeds. There are no feature,
testing or time restrictions for XviD, and it can be used safely and conveniently
all the time. The Xvid developers decided to stop work and go public to
force Sigma Designs to respect the terms of the GPL. The source code, however,
was placed under a restrictive license and only members of the DivX Advanced
Research Centre (DARC) had write access to the project CVS. So Xvid removes
information that is not important for human perception, which is somewhat
similar to MP3 for audio. This enables very high compression rates that
allow to effectively work with digital video on home computers at all.
In 2002, XviD had tension with Sigma Designs, which released the REALmagic
MPEG-4 video codec. Later, it became evident that the codec was pretty
much based on XviD technology, which was fraught with a serious copyright
infringement issue. Files encoded with global motion compensation, Qpel,
MPEG quantization, multiple B-frames or files that exceed the VBV limitations
may not play back properly on DivX Certified hardware devices. The Xvid
codec and player is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux systems. While
you can obtain Xvid free of charge, the quality of the codec is outstanding
and surpasses that of competing, expensive products. The Xvid encoder has
won several awards and has been found in independent tests to provide superior
picture quality and more efficient video compression than any other comparable
video codec.
