What is DIVX?
DivX is a quality file type that works well in DVD players and with MP3
players. While video encoded with the DivX codec is an MPEG-4 video stream,
the DivX Media Format is analogous to media container formats such as Apple's
QuickTime. DivX Video on Demand (DivX VOD) is DivX's version of digital
rights management (DRM), which allows content owners to control distribution
in an effort to thwart piracy. DivX has defined profiles which are subsets
of MPEG-4/AVI and H.264/Matroska standards. Because the grouping is a specific
subset of what is in the standards, there are certification processes for
each of the profiles that device manufacturers must follow. Many newer
"DivX Certified" DVD players are able to play DivX encoded movies,
although the Qpel and global motion compensation features are often omitted
to reduce processing requirements. DivX 6 expanded the scope of DivX from
including just a codec and a player by adding an optional media container
format called "DivX Media Format" ("DMF") (with a .divx
extension) that includes support for the following DVD-Video and VOB container
like features. This media container format is used for the MPEG-4 Part
2 codec. The DivX format is recognized by several software video playback
programs as well as some DVD players and other consumer electronics. Compared
to DVD, DivX had some shortcomings. It didn't have interactive video menus,
multiple subtitles or audio tracks, chapter points and some other features
of DVD. But in June 2005 DivX 6, the latest generation of DivX codecs, was
released. DivX Plus HD is a marketing name for a file type using the standard
Matroska media container format (.mkv), rather than the proprietary DivX
Media Format.
What is iPad?
The iPad is a 9.7 inch touch screen tablet PC made by Apple . The iPad
is basically a netbook without a keyboard. It has a multi-touch LED-backlit
9.7 x 7.5 inch front display and weighs 1.5 pounds, with a battery that
lasts up to ten hours. The iPad (before its release, many referred to it
as the Apple Tablet) is Apple's latest device and was officially announced
January 27, 2010. The wifi-enabled version was released on April 3, 2010.
The iPad has a speaker and built-in microphone so it's ideal for making
phone calls over the Internet, as long as you don't mind not having the
video feature. The iPad comes with several applications, including Safari,
Mail, Photos, Video, iPod, iTunes, App Store, iBooks, Maps, Notes, Calendar,
and Contacts. Several are improved versions of applications developed for
the iPhone or Mac. Scrolling through a long list or menu is achieved by
sliding a finger over the display from bottom to top, or vice versa to
go back. In either case, the list moves as if it is pasted on the outer
surface of a wheel, slowly decelerating as if affected by friction. In
this way, the interface simulates the physics of a real object. The iPad
was initially only available online at the Apple Store as well as the company's
retail locations, but has since become available for purchase through retailers
including Amazon, Walmart, and network operators. In February 2010, Conde
Nast said it would sell iPad subscriptions for several of its magazines
by June. In December 2010, Reuters reported that iPhone and iPad users
have lodged a lawsuit against Apple alleging that some applications were
passing their information to third party advertisers without consent.
