What is RM?
RM files (Real Media), developed by Real Networks, are one of the most
popular formats for streaming video over the Internet. RealPlayer does
not record RealVideo streams, and RealNetworks has advertised this feature
to content owners such as broadcasters, film studios, and music labels,
as a means of discouraging users from copying video. However, other software
exists which can save the streams to files for later viewing. Such copying,
known as time-shifting, is legal in most countries. Using HTTP streaming
works best with pre-recorded files so some alternative protocols have been
developed which work better for live broadcasts. With RealPlayer SP, it
is now possible to save an audio stream to a file. Other programs, including
MPlayer, RM Downloader, VLC media player, StreamBox VCR, HiDownload and
Real7ime Converter can also save streams to a file. RealNetworks says that
the RealVideo and RealAudio codecs are not available in source code under
the RPSL license. Source code is available only under RCSL license for
commercial porting to non-supported processors and operating systems. While
RealNetworks owns most of the intellectual property for RealVideo and RealAudio,
RealNetworks has licensed third party technology for certain aspects of
those codecs. RealNetworks claims that it does not have the rights to license
that technology under an open source license. The combination of the audio
and video formats was called RealMedia and used the file extension .rm.
However, the latest version of RealProducer, Real's flagship encoder, reverted
to using .ra for audio-only files, and began using .rv for video files
(with or without audio), and .rmvb for VBR video files.
What is WebM?
WebM is an audio-video format designed to provide royalty-free, open video
compression for use with HTML5 video. The project's development is sponsored
by Google Inc. A WebM file consists of VP8 video and Vorbis audio streams,
in a container based on a profile of Matroska. Also ST-Ericsson and Huawei
have hardware implementations in their computer chips. On 19 January 2011,
the Free Software Foundation announced its official support for the WebM
project. In June 2011, ZiiLABS demonstrated their 1080p VP8 decoder implementation
running on the ZMS-20 processor. The chip's programmable media processing
array is used to provide the VP8 acceleration. Adobe Systems announced
that its Flash Player will be updated to support WebM, but no exact date
was specified for its addition. A key factor in the web's success is that
its core technologies such as HTML, HTTP, and TCP/IP are open for anyone
to implement and improve. With video being core to the web experience,
a high-quality, open video format choice is needed. WebM is 100% free,
and open-sourced under a BSD-style license. Google acquired ON2, the original
developer of VP8 technology. VP8 is now an open and free technology. The
Free Software Foundation, which maintains the Free Software Definition,
has given its endorsement for WebM and VP8 and considers the software's
license to be compatible with the GNU General Public License. VP8's efficient
bandwidth usage will mean lower serving costs for content publishers and
high quality video for end-users. The codec's relative simplicity makes
it easy to integrate into existing environments and requires less manual
tuning to produce high quality results. These existing attributes and the
rapid innovation we expect through the open-development process make VP8
well suited for the unique requirements of video on the web.
