What is EVO?
High definition video file from an HD DVD disc; stores the movie's main
audio/video data; similar to a .VOB file on a standard DVD; can be played
by various PC video playback programs. It contains the actual video, audio,
subtitle and menu contents in stream form. A wide variety of resolutions
are supported, from low-resolution CIF, all SDTV resolutions supported
by DVD-Video, and HDTV formats: 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. HD DVD drives can
also be used with a desktop/laptop personal computer (PC) running Windows
XP, Windows Vista, Mac OS X v10.5 "Leopard", and many varieties
of Linux. HD DVD-RAM has a single-layer capacity of 20 GB. Like the original
DVD format, the data layer of an HD DVD is 0.6 mm below the surface to
physically protect the data layer from damage. However, the HD DVD physical
disc specifications (but not the codecs) are still in use as the basis
for the China Blue High-definition Disc (CBHD) formerly called CH-DVD.
Backward compatibility is available with all HD DVD players, allowing users
to have a single player to play all types of HD DVD, DVD and CD. HD DVDs
use Advanced Content to allow interactive content to be authored for discs.
Microsoft's implementation of Advanced Content is the HDi Interactive Format,
and "HDi" is frequently used to refer to the Advanced Content
system. The extensions are in the form of private stream data and their
interpretation. For the highest-fidelity audio experience, HD DVD offers
content-producers the choice of LPCM, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.
The storage size also varies: A dual-layer HD DVD holds a maximum of 30
GB of data, while a dual-layer Blu-ray Disc carries 50 GB.
What is MKV?
MKV is a flexible, open standard video file format that has quickly become
the preferred file extension for high definition video on the Internet.
Matroska is an open standards project. This means for personal use it is
absolutely free to use and that the technical specifications describing
the bitstream are open to everybody, even to companies that would like
to support it in their products. MKV files contain video and audio streams
(may also contain subtitles). The streams are likely compressed and have
been produced with an encoder. In order to play these streams a codec is
required. MKV (Matroska) is an open source format based on EBML (Extensible
Binary Meta Language), and includes a greater number of features than supported
by other container formats used in industry. This is a play on the container
(media within a form of media/doll within a doll) aspect of the matryoshka
as it is a container for visual and audio data. The project was announced
on 6 December 2002 as a fork of the Multimedia Container Format (MCF),
after disagreements between MCF lead developer Lasse K?rkk?inen and soon-to-be
Matroska founder Steve Lhomme about the use of the Extensible Binary Meta
Language (EBML) instead of a binary format. Its main features include fast
seeking, high error recovery, modularly extendable, selectable subtitle
and audio streams, chapter entries, menus, and streamable over the internet.
EBML enables the Matroska Development Team to gain significant advantages
in terms of future format extensibility, without breaking file support
in old parsers. Matroska aims to become THE standard of multimedia container
formats. MKV founder Steve Lhomme left the project after disagreeing with
the MCF project leader Lasse Karkkainen regarding using the Extensible
Binary Metal Language (EBML) over another format.
