What is MOD?
MOD and TOD are recording formats for use in digital tapeless camcorders.
The first camcorders that used MOD format appeared in 2003. JVC introduced
the Everio GZ-MG30, which recorded directly to an internal hard disk drive.
Some tools such as MediaInfo can correctly report the aspect ratio of widescreen
MOD files, but media players may or may not display them correctly depending
on the capabilities of the video decoder that they are utilizing at the
time. MOD and TOD formats do not allow recording progressive-scan video,
neither at "film" rates (24, 25, 30 frames/s) nor at "reality"
rates (50, 60 frames/s). This limitation makes MOD and TOD formats suboptimal
for online video viewing, because most video hosting websites stream progressive-scan
video. On another hand, AVCHD allows recording progressive-scan high-definition
video at both "film" and "reality" rates. Standard
definition video is stored in MPEG-2 program stream container files with
MOD extension; in most other systems these files have extension MPG or
MPEG. In January 2007 JVC announced its first high definition tapeless
consumer camcorder, the Everio GZ-HD7, which recorded 1080i MPEG-2 video
to either a built-in hard disk drive or an SD memory card. One of TOD recording
modes, "1440CBR", has the same frame size, aspect ratio and frame
rate as 1080i HDV, and can be loosely called "HDV on disk". Each
file has a sequential name with last three characters comprising a hexadecimal
number, which allows for 4096 unique file names. Media files must be packaged
into distribution formats like HD DVD or Blu-ray Disc, using authoring
software.
What is WebM?
WebM is an open, royalty-free, media file format designed for the web.
Adobe Systems announced that its Flash Player will be updated to support
WebM, but no exact date was specified for its addition. In mid-2010, Simon
Phipps, a board member for the Open Source Initiative, expressed doubts
as to whether the original WebM license was an open-source license, since
it had not been submitted to the OSI for approval. The Free Software Foundation,
which maintains the Free Software Definition, has given its endorsement
for WebM and VP8 and considers the software's license to be compatible
with the GNU General Public License. Native WebM support by Mozilla Firefox,
Opera, and Google Chrome was announced at the 2010 Google I/O conference.
Internet Explorer 9 requires third-party WebM software. Safari for Windows
and Mac OS X relies on QuickTime to play web media, which as of 1 April
2011, does not support WebM unless a third-party plug-in is installed.
A WebM file consists of VP8 video and Vorbis audio streams, in a container
based on a profile of Matroska. WebM was built for the web. By testing
hundreds of thousands of videos with widely varying characteristics, we
found that the VP8 video codec delivers high-quality video while efficiently
adapting to varying processing and bandwidth conditions across a broad
range of devices. Also ST-Ericsson and Huawei have hardware implementations
in their computer chips. WebM Project licenses VP8 hardware accelerators
(RTL IP) to semiconductor companies for 1080p encoding and decoding at
zero cost. AMD, ARM and Broadcom have announced support for hardware acceleration
of the WebM format. Intel is also considering hardware-based acceleration
for WebM in its Atom-based TV chips if the format gains popularity. Qualcomm
and Texas Instruments have announced support, with native support coming
to the TI OMAP processor. Chip&Media have announced a fully hardware
decoder for VP8 that can decode full HD resolution VP8 streams at 60 frames
per second.
