What is MKV?
The Matroska Multimedia Container is an open standard, free container format,
a file format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture, or
subtitle tracks in one file. It is a universal format for storing common
multimedia content, like movies or TV shows. Codec, as a word is an abbreviation of Coder / Decoder.
The video stream located in the MKV file has been "coded" by
the source and now it must be "decoded" by the end user who wishes
to play it. In addition to that, there are also free parsing and playback
libraries available under the BSD license, for commercial software and
Hardware adoption. The format is also known as the Matroska Multimedia
Container, and has several file types associated with the project to include:,
MKV, MKA, MKS, and MK3D. This is a play on the container (media within
a form of media/doll within a doll) aspect of the matryoshka as it is a
container for visual and audio data. MKV is NOT a video or audio compression
format (video codec). The standard stores data in a compressed state along
with an encoder. In order to play MKV files, a supporting codec is required.
It is intended to serve as a universal format for storing common multimedia
content, like movies or TV shows. Matroska is similar in conception to
other containers like AVI, MP4 or ASF, but is completely open source. Businesses
are free to use the standard in commercial projects with the source code
of MKV licensed under the GNU L-GPL by the Matroska Development team. MKV
is an envelope for which there can be many audio, video and subtitles streams,
allowing the user to store a complete movie or CD in a single file.
What is 3GP?
3GP is a multimedia container format defined by the Third Generation Partnership
Project (3GPP) for use on 3G mobile phones but can also be played on some
2G and 4G phones. 3GPP file format was designed for GSM-based Phones and
may have the filename extension ".3gp". 3GP is defined in the
ETSI 3GPP technical specification. The 3GP is used on 3G mobile phones
but can also be played on some 2G and 4G phones. 3GPP is the new worldwide
standards for the creation, delivery and playback of multimedia over 3rd
generation, high-speed wireless networks. Tailored to the unique requirements
of mobile devices, 3GPP and 3GPP2 take advantage of MPEG-4, the standard
for delivery of video and audio over the Internet. The 3GP file type is
primarily associated with '3GPP'. Audio imported from CD onto a PlayStation
3 when it is set to encode to the MPEG-4 AAC codec will copy onto USB devices
in the 3GP format. Designed as a multimedia format for transmitting audio
and video files between 3G cell phones and over the Internet; commonly
used by mobile phones that support video capture. When transferred to a
computer, 3GP movies can be viewed on Linux, Mac, and Windows platforms
with MPlayer and VLC media player. Programs such as Media Player Classic,
K-Multimedia Player, Totem, RealPlayer, QuickTime, and GOM Player can also
be used. The 3GP is structurally based on the ISO base media file format
defined in ISO/IEC 14496-12 - MPEG-4 Part 12, but older versions of the
3GP file format did not use some of its features. The MP4 and the AVC file
format specifications described usage of MPEG-4 content in the ISO base
media file format. The Macintosh type is: 3GPP.
