and replace GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) as an image-file format not requiring

What is WebM?
WebM defines the file container structure, video and audio formats. WebM

mid-2010, Simon Phipps, a board member for the Open Source Initiative,
expressed doubts as to whether the original WebM license was an open-source
license, since it had not been submitted to the OSI for approval. Google
acquired ON2, the original developer of VP8 technology. VP8 is now an open

hardware acceleration of the WebM format. Intel is also considering hardware-based
acceleration for WebM in its Atom-based TV chips if the format gains popularity.
Qualcomm and Texas Instruments have announced support, with native support
coming to the TI OMAP processor. Chip&Media have announced a fully
hardware decoder for VP8 that can decode full HD resolution VP8 streams
at 60 frames per second.
What is PNG?
Portable Network Graphics (PNG, pronounced "PING") is a format
that employs lossless data compression. It was developed as the next format
to the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF), which was patented by Unisys
and Compuserve. PNG supports a 24-bit Red Green Blue palette for the Internet
and was approved by the Internet Steering Group in 1996. Image file stored
in the Portable Network Graphic (PNG) format; contains a bitmap of indexed
colors and uses lossless compression, similar to a .GIF file but without
copyright limitations; commonly used to store graphics for Web images.
The PNG format allows three different styles of transparency: one for indexed
color images and two for greyscale or truecolor images. PNG gives a much
wider range of transparency options than GIF, including alpha channel transparency.
This specification defines an Internet Media Type image/png. Unlike the
GIF89a, the PNG format doesn't support animation since it can't contain
multiple images. The PNG is described as "extensible," however.
Software houses will be able to develop variations of PNG that can contain
multiple, scriptable images. PNG file size can vary significantly depending
on how it is encoded and compressed; this is discussed and a number of
tips are given in PNG: The Definitive Guide. The only limitation of PNG
as compared to GIF is that it does not support animations. Unlike the JPEG
and GIF formats, the PNG format supports an alpha channel, or the "RGBA"
color space. The alpha channel is added to the three standard color channels
(red, green, and blue, or RGB) and provides 256 levels of transparency.
JPEG images do not support transparent pixels and GIF images only support
completely transparent (not partially opaque) pixels. Therefore, the PNG
format allows Web developers and icon designers to fade an image to a transparent
background rather than a specific color. A PNG with an alpha channel can
be placed on any color background and maintain its original appearance,
even around the edges.
