What is DVD?
DVD stands for Digital Versatile/Video Disc. These extra features can include
audio commentary; documentary features, commonly about the making of the
main title; deleted scenes; photo galleries; storyboards; isolated music
scores; trivia text commentary; simple games; film shorts; TV spots; radio
spots; theatrical trailers which were used to promote the main title; and
teaser trailers advertising related movies or DVDs. Professionally encoded
videos average a bitrate of 4-5 Mbit/s with a maximum of 7-8 Mbit/s in
high-action scenes. This is typically done to allow greater compatibility
amongst players, and to help prevent buffer underruns in the case of dirty
or scratched discs. Standard DVD-Video files contain extra information
(such as the number of video tracks, chapters and links to extra features)
that DVD players use to navigate the disc. Its main uses are video and
data storage. Most DVDs are of the same dimensions as compact discs (CDs)
but store more than six times as much data. The subtitle tracks are contained
within the VOB file of the DVD. DVD-Video discs respectively refer to properly
formatted and structured video content. It uses MPEG-2 for video compression,
with AC-3, DTS or MPEG audio for multi-channel audio support. One of the
best features of DVD drives is that they are backward-compatible with CD-ROMs,
meaning they can play old CD-ROMs, CD-I disks, and video CDs, as well as
new DVD-ROMs. A DVD holds a minimum of 4.7GB of data, enough for a full-length
movie. DVDs are commonly used as a medium for digital representation of
movies and other multimedia presentations that combine sound with graphics.
The UDF bridge format provides backwards compatibility for operating systems
that support only ISO 9660. Most DVD players read the UDF filesystem from
a DVD-Video disc and ignore the ISO9660 filesystem.
What is 3GP?
3GP is a multimedia container format defined by the Third Generation Partnership
Project (3GPP) for use on 3G mobile phones but can also be played on some
2G and 4G phones. A 3GP file is always big-endian, storing and transferring
the most significant bytes first. Audio imported from CD onto a PlayStation
3 when it is set to encode to the MPEG-4 AAC codec will copy onto USB devices
in the 3GP format. The 3GP is structurally based on the ISO base media
file format defined in ISO/IEC 14496-12 - MPEG-4 Part 12, but older versions
of the 3GP file format did not use some of its features. 3GPP is worldwide
standard for the creation, delivery and playback of multimedia over 3rd
generation, high-speed wireless networks. 3GP is defined in the ETSI 3GPP
technical specification. The Nintendo DSi supports .3gp on an SD card.
The 3GP file type is primarily associated with '3GPP'. It also contains
descriptions of image sizes and bitrate. The 3GP is used on 3G mobile phones
but can also be played on some 2G and 4G phones. Some newer/higher-end
phones without 3G capabilities may also playback and record in this format
(again, with said limitations). 3GPP is the new worldwide standards for
the creation, delivery and playback of multimedia over 3rd generation,
high-speed wireless networks. 3GPP is based on the MPEG-4 standard which
was derived from Apple's QuickTime. Designed as a multimedia format for
transmitting audio and video files between 3G cell phones and over the
Internet; commonly used by mobile phones that support video capture. The
3GP file format stores video streams as MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 or MPEG-4
Part 10 (AVC/H.264), and audio streams as AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AMR-WB+, AAC-LC,
HE-AAC v1 or Enhanced aacPlus (HE-AAC v2).
