What is ASF?
The ASF file type is primarily associated with Advanced Streaming Format
by Microsoft Corporation. It supports scalable media types and stream prioritization;
as such, it is a format optimized for streaming. They often contain Windows
Media Audio (.WMA) or Windows Media Video (.WMV) data. File format that
wraps various content bitstreams; data types can include audio, video,
script command, JPEG-compressed still images, binary, and other streams
defined by developers. The most common file types contained within an ASF
file are Windows Media Audio (WMA) and Windows Media Video (WMV). Files
containing only WMA audio can be named using a .WMA extension, and files
of audio and video content may have the extension .WMV. Both may use the

the video or audio should be encoded, ASF does more in the structure of
the video/audio stream which is quite similar to the function performed
by the AVI, QuickTime, or Ogg container formats. ASF is part of the Windows
Media Framework. ASF is an extensible file format designed to store synchronized
multimedia data. Like ID3 tags for MP3 files ASF files can also contain
objects representing metadata. For audio - artist, title, album and genre.
For video - director. ASF supports advanced multimedia capabilities including
extensible media types, component download, scaleable media types, author-specified
stream prioritization, multiple language support, and extensive bibliographic
capabilities, including document and content management. Although this
differentiation was introduced in 2003, to this date most webbrowsers (including
the latest versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox) do not function as
might be expected with the 'new' extensions: even when a .wma or .wmv file
is specifically encoded for progressive download, browsers still proceed
to completely download the file before playing it. This can, however, be
easily remedied by simply renaming the .wma or .wmv file to the old extension
.asf.

to the OS for the iPhone through iTunes, and major updates have historically
accompanied new models. Such updates often require a newer version of iTunes-for
example, the 3.0 update requires iTunes 8.2-but the iTunes system requirements
have stayed the same. Updates include bug fixes, security patches and new
features. For example, iPhone 3G users initially experienced dropped calls
until an update was issued. The GSM iPhone 4 features a MicroSIM card that
is located in a slot on the right side of the device.
