What is WMV?
Video file based on the Microsoft Advanced Systems Format (ASF) container
format and compressed with Windows Media compression; similar to an .ASF
file and contains video encoded with one of Microsoft's Windows Media Video
(WMV) proprietary codecs. Usage of the term WMV often refers to the Microsoft
Windows Media Video codec only. File format based in ASF (Advanced Systems
Format) that wraps a video bitstream. This web site documents versions
of the format that contain bitstreams encoded by Windows Media Video 9,
which is also known as VC-9. Some WMV files may also employ Windows Media
Video 7 and 8 codecs. The loss of the ability to restore licenses for WMV
files in the Windows Media Player 11 was not positively received. In addition,
the Microsoft Zune does not support the standard Windows Media DRM system,
rendering protected WMV files unplayable. Microsoft recommends that ASF
files containing non-Windows Media codecs use the generic .ASF file extension.
The first version of the codec, WMV 7, was introduced in 1999, and was
built upon Microsoft's implementation of MPEG-4 Part 2. Continued proprietary
development led to newer versions of the codec, but the bit stream syntax
was not frozen until WMV 9. WMV HD has been touted for its ease of use,
since functionality to convert to WMV HD has been built into Windows Movie
Maker, it has allowed people to convert their home videos to WMV HD as
well as commercial releases they may have received. WMV used to be the
only supported video codec for the Microsoft Silverlight platform, but
H.264 codec is now also supported starting with version 3. Windows Media
Video (WMV) is the most recognized video format within the WMV family.
What is H.264?
H.264 is a codec used to create MP4 files. Its wide compatibility and range
of features has made it a popular encoder for videos. The final drafting
work on the first version of the standard was completed in May 2003. Controversies
surrounding the H.264 video compression standard stem primarily from its
use within the HTML5 Internet standard. The standardization of the first
version of H.264/AVC was completed in May 2003. The JVT management team
was extended by Jens-Rainer Ohm (Aachen University, Germany). Texas Instruments
manufactures a line of ARM + DSP cores that perform DSP H264 BP encoding
1080p at 30fps. This permits flexibility with respect to codecs (which
are implemented as highly optimized DSP code) while being more efficient
than software on a generic CPU. ASIC encoders with H.264 encoder functionality
are available from many different semiconductor companies, but the core
design used in the ASIC is typically licensed from one of a few companies
such as Chips&Media, On2 (formerly Hantro, acquired by Google), Imagination.
Some companies have both FPGA and ASIC product offerings. Since the ITU
designation for the standard is H.264, you may see MPEG-4 Part 10 video
referred to as either AVC or H.264. Both are valid, and refer to the same
standard. Occasionally, it is also referred to as "the JVT codec",
in reference to the Joint Video Team (JVT) organization that developed
it. Even AVCHD, the consumer format offered by the same people behind Blu-ray
and for use in camcorders and Blu-ray recorders, uses H.264 as the main
video format. The 2nd generation Intel Core i processors i3/i5/i7 (code
named "Sandy Bridge") introduced at the January 2011 CES (Consumer
Electronics Show) offer an on-chip hardware full HD H.264 encoder. The
Intel marketing name for the on-chip H.264 encoder feature is "Intel
Quick Sync Video".
