Convert AVI to MKV
|
AVI to MKV Converter Software converts AVI files to MKV. The converter
supports popular codecs for MKV file such as H.264, MPEG-4, Xvid, AAC, AC-3, MP2,
MP3, and Vorbis. The software could calculate bit rate for video according to
video size automatically.
The converter supports common media formats such as DV, WMV, M4B (MPEG-4 audiobook), MP3, OGM, 3G2, Android Tablet, etc. It
could convert MPEG to M4A (MPEG-4 audio), MPEG to PNG image sequence, TS to DV, M4V to WebM (VP8), FLV to MP2, and so on. In other words, the software is an ideal format
Converter Software for common uses.
AVI to MKV Converter Software supports batch conversion and, is full compatible
with Windows 10/8/7/Vista/XP/2000.
What is AVI?
AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave, defined by Microsoft. AVI and codec
are inseparable. Each version of Windows ships with a video player software
(called Windows Media Player), so that is not a problem. The problem is
called the codec. For WAV audio files, Broadcast Wave extensions were designed
to standardize post-production metadata, but an equivalent for AVI files
has not emerged. An AVI file takes the form of a single chunk in a RIFF
formatted file, which is then subdivided into two mandatory "chunks"
and one optional "chunk". AVI combines audio and video into a
single file in a standard container to allow simultaneous playback. In
particular, the Indeo CODEC, popular for video compression on PCs, has
not been ported to Mac OS X. An AVI file may carry audio/visual data inside
the chunks in virtually any compression scheme, including Full Frame (Uncompressed),
Intel Real Time (Indeo), Cinepak, Motion JPEG, Editable MPEG, VDOWave,
ClearVideo / RealVideo, QPEG, and MPEG-4 Video. There are several competing
approaches to including a time code in AVI files, which affects usability
of the format in film and television post-production, although it is widely
used. So now there are hundreds of avi files that look similar but are
completely different inside. The AVI container has no native support for
modern MPEG-4 features like B-Frames. One of the first terms a digital
video freshman gets to know is codec. Recent files might be compressed
with one or another codecs (compression standard). AVI was not intended
to contain video using any compression technique which requires access
to future video frame data beyond the current frame. Approaches exist to
support modern video compression techniques (such as MPEG-4) which rely
on this function, although this is beyond the intent of the original specification
and may cause problems with playback software which does not anticipate
this use.
What is MKV?
The Matroska Multimedia Container is an open standard, free container format,
a file format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture, or
subtitle tracks in one file. It is a universal format for storing common
multimedia content, like movies or TV shows. The name "Matroska" is derived from the Russian word
Matryoshka, which means nesting doll (the common Russian cylindrical-shaped
doll within a doll, also known as a babushka doll). Files are store in
.MKV file extensions. Businesses are free to use the standard in commercial
projects with the source code of MKV licensed under the GNU L-GPL by the
Matroska Development team. The Matroska developers are also continually
working along with hardware producers to include MKV support in multimedia
software typically included with new computers and support in a variety
of operating systems. One MKV file can hold an unlimited number of audio,
video, and subtitle tracks. Also, not all media players can play this format,
even with the codec pack installed. There is just one hitch - there is
no standalone hardware player that is capable of playing MKV files. The
primary goal of the project team that develops and supports the format
is to provide a universal format for multimedia storage based on open standards.
The name and logo can be used without permission in non-commercial contexts;
however, for commercial use the development group asks that companies contact
them for permission. Matroska is similar in conception to other containers
like AVI, MP4 or ASF, but is completely open source. This format is currently
not supported by all operating systems or multimedia software and requires
the latest codec packs installed in order to view the files.
