What is 3GP?
3GP (3GPP file format) is a multimedia container format defined by the
Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) for 3G UMTS multimedia services.
3GPP is the new worldwide standards for the creation, delivery and playback
of multimedia over 3rd generation, high-speed wireless networks. The 3GP
is structurally based on the ISO base media file format defined in ISO/IEC
14496-12 - MPEG-4 Part 12, but older versions of the 3GP file format did
not use some of its features. It also contains descriptions of image sizes
and bitrate. The Macintosh type is: 3GPP. The 3GP file type is primarily
associated with '3GPP'. Audio imported from CD onto a PlayStation 3 when
it is set to encode to the MPEG-4 AAC codec will copy onto USB devices
in the 3GP format. Defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project and
3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 respectively, these standards seek
to provide uniform delivery of rich multimedia over newly evolved, broadband
mobile networks (3rd generation networks) to the latest multimedia-enabled
wireless devices. Designed as a multimedia format for transmitting audio
and video files between 3G cell phones and over the Internet; commonly
used by mobile phones that support video capture. QuickTime 6.5 includes
support for key components of the 3GPP and 3GPP2 specifications. When transferred
to a computer, 3GP movies can be viewed on Linux, Mac, and Windows platforms
with MPlayer and VLC media player. Programs such as Media Player Classic,
K-Multimedia Player, Totem, RealPlayer, QuickTime, and GOM Player can also
be used. 3GPP is worldwide standard for the creation, delivery and playback
of multimedia over 3rd generation, high-speed wireless networks.
What is H.264?
H.264 is a codec used to create MP4 files. Its wide compatibility and range
of features has made it a popular encoder for videos. ASIC encoders with
H.264 encoder functionality are available from many different semiconductor
companies, but the core design used in the ASIC is typically licensed from
one of a few companies such as Chips&Media, On2 (formerly Hantro, acquired
by Google), Imagination. Some companies have both FPGA and ASIC product
offerings. The H.264 standard can be viewed as a "family of standards",
the members of which are the profiles described below. VCEG was chaired
by Gary Sullivan (Microsoft, formerly PictureTel, USA). High Profile (HiP):
The primary profile for broadcast and disc storage applications, particularly
for high-definition television applications (for example, this is the profile
adopted by the Blu-ray Disc storage format and the DVB HDTV broadcast service).
Also known as AVC (Advanced Video Coding, MPEG-4 Part 10), H.264 is actually
defined in an identical pair of standards maintained by different organizations,
together known as the Joint Video Team (JVT). The final drafting work on
the first version of the standard was completed in May 2003. It is thus
common to refer to the standard with names such as H.264/AVC, AVC/H.264,
H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, or MPEG-4/H.264 AVC, to emphasize the common heritage.
Extended Profile (XP): Intended as the streaming video profile, this profile
has relatively high compression capability and some extra tricks for robustness
to data losses and server stream switching. That work included the development
of two new profiles of the standard: the Multiview High Profile and the
Stereo High Profile.
