What is MOD?
MOD and TOD are recording formats for use in digital tapeless camcorders.
Some tools such as MediaInfo can correctly report the aspect ratio of widescreen
MOD files, but media players may or may not display them correctly depending
on the capabilities of the video decoder that they are utilizing at the
time. Sony employs MPEG-2 video encoding and Program Stream container in
its standard definition camcorders too, but the directory structure is
different from MOD, and the media files have conventional MPG extension.
As of 2011, MOD format is still being used in standard definition camcorders
manufactured by JVC, Panasonic and Canon. This video can be easily authored
for watching on a DVD player without recompression, because it is fully
compliant with DVD-video standard. The first camcorders that used MOD format
appeared in 2003. JVC introduced the Everio GZ-MG30, which recorded directly
to an internal hard disk drive. Each file has a sequential name with last
three characters comprising a hexadecimal number, which allows for 4096
unique file names. Software that is shipped with camcorders is capable
of processing the aspect ratio information correctly, aided perhaps by
the metadata stored in MOI files. Some video decoders do not interpret
the aspect ratio information in the media file header correctly, so 16:9
video may appear squeezed horizontally when viewed. Transport stream files
can be converted into more common program stream files without recompressing
the video itself. One of TOD recording modes, "1440CBR", has
the same frame size, aspect ratio and frame rate as 1080i HDV, and can
be loosely called "HDV on disk".
What is H.264?
The H.264 video codec supports high definition video and audio and it can
be used with many different file formats such as MP4, MPEG, AVI and MOV
to name just a few. Occasionally, it is also referred to as "the JVT
codec", in reference to the Joint Video Team (JVT) organization that
developed it. Canon DSLRs use the H.264 QuickTime MOV as the native recording.
A specific decoder decodes at least one, but not necessarily all profiles.
The decoder specification describes which of the profiles can be decoded.
The standardization of the first version of H.264/AVC was completed in
May 2003. On the other hand, for spatial and quality bitstream scalability
(i.e. the presence of a sub-bitstream with lower spatial resolution/quality
than the main bitstream), the NAL (Network Abstraction Layer) is removed
from the bitstream when deriving the sub-bitstream. HTML5 is being developed
by the HTML5 working group as an open standard to be adopted by all web
browser developers. The next major feature added to the standard was Scalable
Video Coding (SVC). It is thus common to refer to the standard with names
such as H.264/AVC, AVC/H.264, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, or MPEG-4/H.264 AVC, to
emphasize the common heritage. High Profile (HiP): The primary profile
for broadcast and disc storage applications, particularly for high-definition
television applications (for example, this is the profile adopted by the
Blu-ray Disc storage format and the DVB HDTV broadcast service). In this
case, high-level syntax and inter-prediction reference pictures in the
bitstream are constructed accordingly. To improve the power efficiency
and reduce hardware form-factor, special-purpose hardware may be employed,
either for the complete encoding or decoding process, or for acceleration
assistance within a CPU-controlled environment.
