What is ASF?
ASF stands for Advanced Systems Format. ASF is part of the Windows Media
Framework. The Advanced Systems Format (ASF) is the file format used by
Windows Media. Like ID3 tags for MP3 files ASF files can also contain objects
representing metadata. For audio - artist, title, album and genre. For
video - director. ASF files specify the structure of the audio or video
stream, but not the encoding method. These files are identical to the old
.ASF files but for their extension and MIME-type. Instead of specifying
how (i.e. with which codec) the video or audio should be encoded, ASF does
more in the structure of the video/audio stream which is quite similar
to the function performed by the AVI, QuickTime, or Ogg container formats.
Windows Media Files: ASF files have the file extension .asf, but ASF files
which contain Windows Media codecs are often given the file extension .wmv
or .wma. The format specifies the structure of the video/audio stream.
Although the ASF container format can technically include any codec, Microsoft's
encoding tools (including Windows Media Encoder and Windows Movie Maker)
produce ASF/WMA/WMV files using the DirectX Media Objects (DMO) framework.
So far, third-party DMO-based codecs remain extremely rare. One of the
objectives of ASF was to support playback from digital media servers, HTTP
servers, and local storage devices such as hard disk drives. Files of ASF
format support playback from digital media servers, HTTP servers, and local
storage devices. ASF files can also contain objects representing metadata,
such as the artist, title, album and genre for an audio track, or the director
of a video track, much like the ID3 tags of MP3 files.
What is WebM?
WebM is an open, royalty-free, media file format designed for the web.
Media players such as VLC, Miro, and Winamp, have announced support. MPlayer
has native support for playing WebM files. mkvtoolnix, the popular Matroska
creation tools, have implemented support for Multiplexing/Demultiplexing
WebM-compliant files out of the box. Haali Media Splitter has also announced
support for muxing/demuxing of WebM. As of version 1.4.9, the LiVES video
editor has support for realtime decoding and for encoding to WebM format
using ffmpeg libraries. MPC-HC as of SVN 2071 and higher builds supports
WebM playback with internal VP8 decoder based on FFmpeg's code. The full
decoding support for WebM is available in MPC-HC since version 1.4.2499.0.
Skype has implemented the VP8 codec into the Skype 5.0 software. VP8's
efficient bandwidth usage will mean lower serving costs for content publishers
and high quality video for end-users. The codec's relative simplicity makes
it easy to integrate into existing environments and requires less manual
tuning to produce high quality results. These existing attributes and the
rapid innovation we expect through the open-development process make VP8
well suited for the unique requirements of video on the web. On 7 January
2011, Rockchip released the world's first chip to host a full hardware
implementation of 1080p VP8 decoding. The video acceleration in the RK29xx
chip is handled by the WebM Project's G-Series 1 hardware decoder IP. Logitech
is planning to use WebM as part of a video calling service. A key factor
in the web's success is that its core technologies such as HTML, HTTP,
and TCP/IP are open for anyone to implement and improve. With video being
core to the web experience, a high-quality, open video format choice is
needed. WebM is 100% free, and open-sourced under a BSD-style license.
