What is WMV?
WMV (Windows Media Video) is a common video format used on Windows operating
systems and enabled media devices. Videos in this format range in size
depending on the quality settings and resolution. The latest versions of
WMV (now, summer 2005, the latest one is called WMV10) don't have much
in common with MPEG-4 anymore, but use Microsoft's own video encoding technologies
instead. The ASF container can optionally support digital rights management
using a combination of elliptic curve cryptography key exchange, DES block
cipher, a custom block cipher, RC4 stream cipher and the SHA-1 hashing
function. Through standardization from the Society of Motion Picture and
Television Engineers (SMPTE), WMV 9 has gained adoption for physical-delivery
formats such as HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc. The file extension .WMV typically
describes ASF files that use Windows Media Video codecs. Microsoft recommends
that ASF files containing non-Windows Media codecs use the generic .ASF
file extension. Windows Media Format 11 adds support for HD video up to
1080P. WMF 11 runs only on Windows XP and Vista. WMV HD has been touted
for its ease of use, since functionality to convert to WMV HD has been
built into Windows Movie Maker, it has allowed people to convert their
home videos to WMV HD as well as commercial releases they may have received.
The licensing terms of DRM protected titles are determined by the content
providers and not Microsoft Corporation. On the Macintosh platform, Microsoft
released a PowerPC version of Windows Media Player for Mac OS X in 2003,
but further development of the software has ceased. Microsoft currently
endorses the 3rd party Flip4Mac WMV, a QuickTime Component which allows
Macintosh users to play WMV files in any player that uses the QuickTime
framework, free of charge to view files but chargeable to convert formats.
The WMV installer is bundled with Microsoft Silverlight by default, installation
without Silverlight can be accomplished with a "Custom" install.
According to the Flip4Mac website, WMV files with DRM encryption are not
compatible with the component.
What is OGV?
The OGV file format is the container format for the Theora video compression
format, and the Vorbis audio format. It is an open source container format
supported by many open source video players. Like all our multimedia technology
it can be used to distribute film and video online and on disc without
the licensing and royalty fees or vendor lock-in associated with other
formats. The Theora I bitstream format was frozen in June 2004 after the
libtheora 1.0alpha3 release. Further work on adaptive quantization, as
well as overall detailed subjective tuning of the codec, is still to come.
Theora scales from postage stamp to HD resolution, and is considered particularly
competitive at low bitrates. It is in the same class as MPEG-4/DiVX, and
like the Vorbis audio codec it has lots of room for improvement as encoder
technology develops. Theora video streams can be stored in any suitable
container format. Most commonly it is found in the Ogg container with Vorbis
or FLAC audio streams which provides a completely open, royalty-free multimedia
format. It can also be used with the Matroska container. The Theora I Specification
was completely published in 2004. Any later changes in the specification
are minor updates. Theora is an open and royalty-free lossy video compression
technology being developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation as part of their
Ogg project. Based upon On2 Technologies' VP3 codec, Theora competes with
MPEG-4, WMV, and similar low-bitrate video compression schemes. Theora
is a variable-bitrate, DCT-based video compression scheme. Like most common
video codecs, Theora also uses chroma subsampling, block-based motion compensation
and an 8-by-8 DCT block. Pixels are grouped into various structures, namely
super blocks, blocks and macroblocks.
