What is DVR-MS?
DVR MS (Microsoft Digital Video Recording) files are created in Microsoft's
Windows Media Center. A simple registry tweak/hack also exists for allowing
the Windows XP version of Windows Movie Maker to natively import/edit DVR-MS
files. Microsoft does not, however, provide a generic DirectShow filter
to enable playback support in third party DirectShow-based media players
on Windows Vista or on Windows XP Media Center Edition. Major companies
such as Microsoft and Amazon use DRM protection for their media files.
The DVR feature of Windows XP Media Center Edition, Windows Vista and the
Windows 7 version of Windows Media Center create files in this format.
The Media Center Edition of Windows XP introduced the DVR-MS file with
PVR (Personal Video Recorder) capabilities, such as pausing live television
programs, time-shifting, and simultaneous recording and playback. DVR-MS
can also be converted to another format changing only the container format
(extracting the original MPEG-2 data without any visual loss) using FFmpeg
and VLC media player's transcoding wizard. The extension was originally
used by Zach Johnson who at the time was a developer for the television
recording engine for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition. The format
uses MPEG-2 format for video encoding and MPEG-1 Layer II for audio encoding.
Windows 7 includes built-in support for converting non copy-protected WTV
files to DVR-MS. Unprotected DVR-MS files (files not marked in this way)
can be played back on any device running Windows XP with Service Pack 1
or later Windows operating systems, hotfix 810243 for Windows XP RTM (which
adds DVR-MS support to DirectShow), and on Windows Mobile 6.
What is 3GP?
3GP is a required file format for video and associated speech/audio media
types and timed text in ETSI 3GPP technical specifications for IP Multimedia
Subsystem (IMS), Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast
Service (MBMS) and Transparent end-to-end Packet-switched Streaming Service
(PSS). 3GPP is the new worldwide standards for the creation, delivery and
playback of multimedia over 3rd generation, high-speed wireless networks.
The 3GP is structurally based on the ISO base media file format defined
in ISO/IEC 14496-12 - MPEG-4 Part 12, but older versions of the 3GP file
format did not use some of its features. Some cell phones use the .mp4
extension for 3GP video. Designed as a multimedia format for transmitting
audio and video files between 3G cell phones and over the Internet; commonly
used by mobile phones that support video capture. These extensions were
registered by the registration authority for code-points in ISO base media
file format ("MP4 Family" files). Most 3G capable mobile phones
support the playback and recording of video in 3GP format (memory, maximum
filesize for playback and recording, and resolution limits exist and vary).
3GPP file format was designed for GSM-based Phones and may have the filename
extension ".3gp". The 3GP is used on 3G mobile phones but can
also be played on some 2G and 4G phones. 3GPP is based on the MPEG-4 standard
which was derived from Apple's QuickTime. Defined by the 3rd Generation
Partnership Project and 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 respectively,
these standards seek to provide uniform delivery of rich multimedia over
newly evolved, broadband mobile networks (3rd generation networks) to the
latest multimedia-enabled wireless devices.
