What is RM?
RMVB (Real Media Video) is a multimedia container format capable of storing
audio and video data. Typically these streams are in CBR (constant bitrate),
but a container for VBR (variable bitrate) streams, named RMVB (RealMedia
variable bitrate), has been developed. The .ram (Real Audio Metadata) and
.smil (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language) file formats are sometimes
encountered as links from web pages (see Streaming Audio section below).
When a user clicks on such a link, the user's web browser downloads the
.ram or .smil file and launches the user's media player. The media player
reads the PNM or RTSP URL from the file and then plays the stream. RealAudio
was developed as a streaming media format, meaning that it can be played
while it is downloaded. It is possible to stream RealAudio using HTTP.
In this case, the RealAudio file is retrieved similarly to a normal web
page, but playback begins as soon as the first part is received and continues
while the rest of the file is downloaded. With RealPlayer SP, it is now
possible to save an audio stream to a file. Other programs, including MPlayer,
RM Downloader, VLC media player, StreamBox VCR, HiDownload and Real7ime
Converter can also save streams to a file. When RealAudio was introduced,
RealNetworks disclosed no technical details about the audio format or how
it was encoded, but it was soon noticed that some of the audio codecs used
in RealAudio were identical to those used in cellular telephones and digital
television. RealMedia Variable Bitrate (RMVB) may be an unfamiliar video
format for many Western computer users. The latest version of RealPlayer
that can run on Windows 9x is RealPlayer 8; but this version can be easily
modified to play RealPlayer 9 and 10 files, by the manual addition of just
three .dll files (codecs and plugins), from Microsoft's free distribution
of RealPlayer 10, that aren't included in RealPlayer 8 Basic.
What is H.264?
The H.264 video codec supports high definition video and audio and it can
be used with many different file formats such as MP4, MPEG, AVI and MOV
to name just a few. Constrained Baseline Profile (CBP): Primarily for low-cost
applications, this profile is most typically used in videoconferencing
and mobile applications. It corresponds to the subset of features that
are in common between the Baseline, Main, and High Profiles. Developed
for use in high definition systems such as HDTV, Blu-ray and HD DVD as
well as low resolution portable devices such as Sony's PSP and Apple's
iPod, H.264 offers better quality at lower file sizes than both MPEG-2
and MPEG-4 ASP (DivX or XviD). Also known as AVC (Advanced Video Coding,
MPEG-4 Part 10), H.264 is actually defined in an identical pair of standards
maintained by different organizations, together known as the Joint Video
Team (JVT). An encoder converts video into a compressed format and a decoder
converts compressed video back into an uncompressed format. From January
2005 to November 2007, the JVT was working on an extension of H.264/AVC
towards scalability by an Annex (G) called Scalable Video Coding (SVC).
The design work on the Fidelity Range Extensions was completed in July
2004, and the drafting work on them was completed in September 2004. In
June 2004, the Fidelity range extensions (FRExt) project was finalized.
In December 2001, VCEG and the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG - ISO/IEC
JTC 1/SC 29/WG 11) formed a Joint Video Team (JVT), with the charter to
finalize the video coding standard. Controversies surrounding the H.264
video compression standard stem primarily from its use within the HTML5
Internet standard.
