What is ASF?
ASF stands for Advanced Systems Format. ASF files specify the structure
of the audio or video stream, but not the encoding method. This description
is focused on the use of the format for audio and video. Due to this encoded
with different audio or video codecs the files will still have .asf extension
(just like other container formats AVI or OGG). The advantage of ASF format
is that you may begin playing your video file before it is streamed to
the end. ASF files can also contain objects representing metadata, such
as the artist, title, album and genre for an audio track, or the director
of a video track, much like the ID3 tags of MP3 files. File format that
wraps various content bitstreams; data types can include audio, video,
script command, JPEG-compressed still images, binary, and other streams
defined by developers. Mostly, however, they contain material encoded for
'progressive download', which can be distributed by any webserver and then
offers the same advantages as streaming: the file starts playing as soon
as a minimum number of bytes is received and the rest of the download continues
in the background while one is watching or listening. The Advanced Systems
Format (ASF) is the file format used by Windows Media. Files of ASF format
support playback from digital media servers, HTTP servers, and local storage
devices. ASF supports advanced multimedia capabilities including extensible
media types, component download, scaleable media types, author-specified
stream prioritization, multiple language support, and extensive bibliographic
capabilities, including document and content management. They can be compressed
using a variety of video codecs.
What is Xvid?
Xvid is an open source video compression format and is a direct competitor
to the proprietary DivX format. There's wide-spread support for Xvid video
in hardware devices. E.g. DVD players or portable media devices can handle
Xvid video. Also, a lot of devices come bundled with Xvid to permit the
interoperable creation of content or enable playback of video on PC that
has been recorded with devices such as digital video recorders or digital
cameras, camcorders or mobile phones. Hence, Xvid can somewhat be seen
as a ZIP for video. But unlike ZIP, Xvid is not lossless. That means that
a video after compression and decompression with Xvid won't be identical
to the original source. Typically however, a difference to the source is
visually imperceptible. Due to its speed, high-definition video compressed
with Xvid can be easily played back on today's PCs or PAL video from e.g.
a TV card can be captured in real-time using the Xvid codec. A major strength
of Xvid is the premium picture quality it delivers, especially for offline,
multi-pass compression. Therefore, the Xvid codec is ideal for archiving
home video on DVD or CD. Consequently, many digital cameras or DVD players
come bundled with the Xvid codec today. Xvid is Free Software and released
under the GNU GPL license. This means that the source code of the software
is publically available and programmers are allowed to make modifications
to the code. Also, redistribution of Xvid is permitted but only under the
terms of the GPL license. The XviD codec makes it possible to compress
a full-length DVD-quality movie enough to fit on one or two CDs, depending
on the length of the movie. To play XviD videos you first need to install
the XviD codec on your computer.
