What is MOV?
MOV is a file extension used by the QuickTime-wrapped files. The format
was created by Apple Computer to work with multimedia files. Though MOV
files are quite often found in the web, to play them on Windows computer
one has to install an extra component or convert to other format. QuickTime
movie files, which have the file extension .mov, are among the primary
video files that work with Apple's iMovie. The iMovie video-editing software
comes standard with Apple computers. Importing a movie file into the application
and editing it by cutting, pasting and adjusting the audio/video are all
simple processes. You can then take the edited movie and save it in a new
file, be it in .mov or some other format. QuickTime is bundled with Mac
OS X. QuickTime for Microsoft Windows has always been downloadable as a
standalone installation, as well as being bundled with Apple's iTunes.
It is a proprietary format, but playable on both Apple and Windows-based
computers. Apple provides a version of QuickTime for free (and is automatically
installed with the latest versions of iTunes) that can easily handle the
MOV video files. Although this file is created and designed by Apple, the
video format has become popular enough that both systems accept .mov content
(otherwise, a majority of the video files downloaded form the Internet
become unusable on Windows-based systems). Each track either contains a
digitally encoded media stream (using a specific format) or a data reference
to the media stream located in another file. Tracks are maintained in a
hierarchical data structure consisting of objects called atoms. An atom
can be a parent to other atoms or it can contain media or edit data, but
it cannot do both.
What is WebM?
WebM defines the file container structure, video and audio formats. WebM
files consist of video streams compressed with the VP8 video codec and
audio streams compressed with the Vorbis audio codec. The WebM file structure
is based on the Matroska container. VP8's highly efficient bandwidth usage
and lower storage requirements can help publishers recognize immediate
cost savings. Also, the relative simplicity of VP8 makes it easy to integrate
into existing environments and requires comparatively little manual tuning
in the encoder to produce high-quality results. In mid-2010, Simon Phipps,
a board member for the Open Source Initiative, expressed doubts as to whether
the original WebM license was an open-source license, since it had not
been submitted to the OSI for approval. WebM was built for the web. By
testing hundreds of thousands of videos with widely varying characteristics,
we found that the VP8 video codec delivers high-quality video while efficiently
adapting to varying processing and bandwidth conditions across a broad
range of devices. WebM Project licenses VP8 hardware accelerators (RTL
IP) to semiconductor companies for 1080p encoding and decoding at zero
cost. AMD, ARM and Broadcom have announced support for hardware acceleration
of the WebM format. Intel is also considering hardware-based acceleration
for WebM in its Atom-based TV chips if the format gains popularity. Qualcomm
and Texas Instruments have announced support, with native support coming
to the TI OMAP processor. Chip&Media have announced a fully hardware
decoder for VP8 that can decode full HD resolution VP8 streams at 60 frames
per second. WebM includes: VP8, a high-quality video codec we are releasing
today under a BSD-style, royalty-free license; Vorbis, an already open
source and broadly implemented audio codec; a container format based on
a subset of the Matroska media container.
