What is TS?
TS format is a container format that encapsulates packetized elementary
streams and other data. TS files are nowadays very wide spread on the Internet
as (usually split) recordings from HDTV broadcasts. It is also known as
ITU-T Rec. H.222.0. Its design goal is to allow multiplexing of digital
video and audio and to synchronize the output. MPEG-2 is the format used
in the DVD-Video format and is also part of the HD DVD specification, although
it has trouble competing with more compressible formats such as VC-1 and
H.264. It is contrasted with program stream, designed for more reliable
media such as DVDs. The transport stream allows for multiplexing of the
digital video and audio, which means the data is combined into a single
synchronous transmission bit stream, for transmission over a variety of
standard mediums such as DSL, IP, IPv, Ethernet, Cable TV networks, and
more. As an MPEG format, there are a variety of players and methods to
play back TS files or to "convert" them to more compliant MPEG-2
files for authoring as DVD / HD DVD.
What is WebM?
WebM is an open, royalty-free, media file format designed for the web.
A WebM file consists of VP8 video and Vorbis audio streams, in a container
based on a profile of Matroska. In mid-2010, Simon Phipps, a board member
for the Open Source Initiative, expressed doubts as to whether the original
WebM license was an open-source license, since it had not been submitted
to the OSI for approval. A key factor in the web's success is that its
core technologies such as HTML, HTTP, and TCP/IP are open for anyone to
implement and improve. With video being core to the web experience, a high-quality,
open video format choice is needed. WebM is 100% free, and open-sourced
under a BSD-style license. MPC-HC as of SVN 2071 and higher builds supports
WebM playback with internal VP8 decoder based on FFmpeg's code. The full
decoding support for WebM is available in MPC-HC since version 1.4.2499.0.
NVIDIA has stated that they support VP8 adoption, but they have no specific
plans to provide hardware support. On 19 January 2011, the Free Software
Foundation announced its official support for the WebM project. Skype has
implemented the VP8 codec into the Skype 5.0 software. The Free Software
Foundation, which maintains the Free Software Definition, has given its
endorsement for WebM and VP8 and considers the software's license to be
compatible with the GNU General Public License. Google acquired ON2, the
original developer of VP8 technology. VP8 is now an open and free technology.
In response, the WebM Project decoupled patents from copyright, offering
the code under a standard BSD license and patents under a separate grant.
In January 2011, Google announced that the WebM Project Team will release
plugins for Internet Explorer and Safari to allow playback of WebM files
through the standard HTML5 <video> tag. As of 9 June 2012, a public
preview version of this plug-in is available for Internet Explorer 9.
