developer for the television recording engine for Microsoft Windows XP

1 or later Windows operating systems, hotfix 810243 for Windows XP RTM
(which adds DVR-MS support to DirectShow), and on Windows Mobile 6. The
DVR feature of Windows XP Media Center Edition, Windows Vista and the Windows
7 version of Windows Media Center create files in this format. Microsoft
does not, however, provide a generic DirectShow filter to enable playback
support in third party DirectShow-based media players on Windows Vista
or on Windows XP Media Center Edition. DVR-MS can also be converted to
another format changing only the container format (extracting the original
MPEG-2 data without any visual loss) using FFmpeg and VLC media player's
transcoding wizard. Starting with Windows Media Center TV Pack 2008 and
moving forward, Microsoft has indicated that DVR-MS is being replaced with
the WTV format. Zach Johnson, a developer for Microsoft Windows XP, was
the first to use the DVR-MS file extension. Microsoft's Developer Network
(MSDN) has an article with sample code and binaries demonstrating how to
use DVR-MS and convert them to WMV. Both the audio and video components
of DVR-MS files rely on MPEG codecs, but unlike MPEG files, DVR-MS files
are not widely recognized in computer programs.
What is MOV?
Common multimedia format often used for saving movies and other video files;
uses a proprietary compression algorithm developed by Apple Computer; compatible
with both Macintosh and Windows platforms. The codec initially was developed
by use in Apple's QuickTime player. MOV files are played on a QuickTime
Video player. QuickTime player is a free media player developed by Apple
and is available for Windows and Mac OS X systems. This easy-to-use player
allows you to play your MOV files of different sizes and aspect ratios
at high resolutions. Watch your standard or high-definition MOV files in

contain video, audio, text, effects and other information that make the

this file is created and designed by Apple, the video format has become
popular enough that both systems accept .mov content (otherwise, a majority
of the video files downloaded form the Internet become unusable on Windows-based
systems). QuickTime enables file compression by modifying video, effects
and audio settings. QuickTime is bundled with Mac OS X. QuickTime for Microsoft
Windows has always been downloadable as a standalone installation, as well
as being bundled with Apple's iTunes. Quicktime is a multimedia development,
storage, and playback technology from Apple. Because both MOV and MP4 containers
can use the same MPEG-4 codecs, they are mostly interchangeable in a QuickTime-only
environment. MP4, being an international standard, has more support. This
is especially true on hardware devices, such as the Sony PSP and various
DVD players; on the software side, most DirectShow / Video for Windows
codec packs include an MP4 parser, but not one for MOV.
