What is DVR-MS?
DVR MS is a digital file protocol developed by Microsoft for storing digital
audio and video. DRM, or digital rights management, is the term to describe
restricting or limiting the use of digital content and digital devices.
Some early freeware applications which convert the files can be found from
third parties such as at The Green Button. The files are used with Microsoft's
Windows Media Center, which can be used as a DVR to view and capture TV
shows through your computer. The format uses MPEG-2 format for video encoding
and MPEG-1 Layer II for audio encoding. DVR-MS is the file type used for
video that has been captured from television through a digital video recorder.
Unprotected DVR-MS files (files not marked in this way) can be played back
on any device running Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or later Windows operating
systems, hotfix 810243 for Windows XP RTM (which adds DVR-MS support to
DirectShow), and on Windows Mobile 6. Similar in format to *.ASF, the *.DVR-MS
(DVR) file enhancements allow the creation of key PVR functionality, including
time-shifting, live pause, and simultaneous record and playback. These
files now use a .WTV extension. A simple registry tweak/hack also exists
for allowing the Windows XP version of Windows Movie Maker to natively
import/edit DVR-MS files. The format is designed primarily for recording
and playback of television programs recorded on a computer. DVR-MS files
have Digital Video Recording (DVR) functions, which includes pausing of
live television, recording television programs and other DVR capabilities.
MediaPortal also uses this format and comes with the plugin My Burner,
which can be used to (automatically) convert DVR-MS files to regular MPEG-2.
Also, Orb uses the DVR-MS file format for recording and streaming audio
and video via its web-based DVR.
What is MKV?
A MKV (Matroska video) file is a video file, similar to AVI and MP4 files,
but unlike these multimedia formats, the MKV format is an open source container
format. MKV is an envelope for which there can be many audio, video and
subtitles streams, allowing the user to store a complete movie or CD in
a single file. Files are store in .MKV file extensions. The format is also
known as the Matroska Multimedia Container, and has several file types
associated with the project to include:, MKV, MKA, MKS, and MK3D. This
is a play on the container (media within a form of media/doll within a
doll) aspect of the matryoshka as it is a container for visual and audio
data. In addition to that, there are also free parsing and playback libraries
available under the BSD license, for commercial software and Hardware adoption.
MKV files contain video and audio streams (may also contain subtitles).
The streams are likely compressed and have been produced with an encoder.
In order to play these streams a codec is required. The name "matroska"
was derived from the Russian word "matryoshka," referring to
the Russian dolls that contain many dolls within one doll. All Matroska
file types (to include MKV) are open and free to use without license fee.
MKV founder Steve Lhomme left the project after disagreeing with the MCF
project leader Lasse Karkkainen regarding using the Extensible Binary Metal
Language (EBML) over another format. For a media player to read MKV files,
the latest codec pack must first be installed, usually recommended from
the Combined Community Codec Pack. The following media players have been
tested and proved by Matroska to support MKV files: ALShow, Avidemux, BS
Player, Chameleo, The Core Media Player, Core Player Mobile, The Core Pocket
Media Player, foobar2000, GOM Player, Gstreamer-based Players, Handbrake,
jetAudio, Kaffeine, The KMPlayer, Media Player Classic, Media Player Classic
- Home Cinema, MediaPortal, Mezzmo Media Player, MPlayer, MythTV, Perian
Quicktime Plugin for Mac OS X, Target Longlife Media Player, Totem Movie
Player, VirtualDubMod, VLC media player, VSO, Vuze Media Player, Windows
Media Player 11, xine, Zoom Player, plexapp, and XBMC.
