What is M2TS?
M2TS is a Sony high definition video file type. M2TS files are raw AVCHD
videos recorded using Sony's camcorders, such as the HDR-SR1 and HDR-SR5
models. Panasonic, Canon and other brands of AVCHD camcorders also record
in M2TS format. The M2TS format is used for compressing video data onto
Blu-ray discs. They can essentially be distributed and opened as individual
video files since M2TS files contain an MPEG-2 video codec. Some players
will need an appropriate codec, component or plugin installed. The BDAV
container format used on AVCHD equipment is more restricted and can contain
only H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video compression and Dolby Digital (AC-3) audio
compression or uncompressed LPCM audio. There are two major variants of
MPEG-2 TS. If multiple programs are sets of video and other Streams intended
to play together, are muxed into the TS it's called an MPTS, or Multiple
Program Transport Stream. Apple's Final Cut Pro can read .MTS files (as
stored in Sony HDR camcorders) by using the AVCHD plugin in the Log and
Transfer window. The M2TS file extension is used to distribute digital
video saved in the high-definition Blu-ray BDAV format. However, programs
like Sony Vegas Pro and AVS Video Editor can open and edit both Sony M2TS
files as well as Panasonic M2TS files. (Sony Vegas Pro v.9 is also capable
of reading and editing M2TS files produced by Canon Vixia Camcorders.)
The only other piece of software known currently to handle both types is
Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultimate and Cyberlink Power Director v8. The BDAV container
is also used in the BDAV (Blu-ray Disc Audio/Visual) disc format, the consumer-oriented
alternative to the BDMV discs.
What is H.264?
H.264 is a video compression codec that is used on MPEG-4 videos. It supports
high resolution and compressions to give you stunning video pictures. Extended
Profile (XP): Intended as the streaming video profile, this profile has
relatively high compression capability and some extra tricks for robustness
to data losses and server stream switching. The next major feature added
to the standard was Multiview Video Coding (MVC). AVC-Intra is an intraframe-only
compression format, developed by Panasonic. Therefore, the difference between
hardware and software based implementation is more on power-efficiency,
flexibility and cost. That work included the development of two new profiles
of the standard: the Multiview High Profile and the Stereo High Profile.
Occasionally, it is also referred to as "the JVT codec", in reference
to the Joint Video Team (JVT) organization that developed it. The final
drafting work on the first version of the standard was completed in May
2003. The CCTV (Closed Circuit TV) and Video Surveillance markets have
included the technology in many products. In 2000, Thomas Wiegand (Heinrich
Hertz Institute, Germany) became VCEG co-chair. The maximum bit rate for
High Profile is 1.25 times that of the Base/Extended/Main Profiles, 3 times
for Hi10P, and 4 times for Hi422P/Hi444PP. The first draft design for that
new standard was adopted in August 1999. The standardization of the first
version of H.264/AVC was completed in May 2003. In the first project to
extend the original standard, the JVT then developed what was called the
Fidelity Range Extensions (FRExt). Canon DSLRs use the H.264 QuickTime
MOV as the native recording.
