What is DVD?
Short for digital versatile disc or digital video disc, a type of optical
disk technology similar to the CD-ROM. In theory, this allows the motion
picture studios to control the various aspects of a release (including
content, date and price) on a region-by-region basis, or ensure the success
of "staggered" or delayed cinema releases from country to country.
MPEG-1 video allows 352 * 288 pixels at 25 frame/s, progressive (Same as
the VCD Standard), 352 * 240 pixels at 29.97 frame/s, progressive (Same
as the VCD Standard). Discs using the DVD-Video specification require a
DVD drive and a MPEG-2 decoder (e.g., a DVD player, or a computer DVD drive
with a software DVD player). Transparency allows laying subtitles over
the video during playback. Video with 4:3 frame aspect ratio is supported
in all video modes. Widescreen video is supported only in full D1 resolutions.
VOB is based on the MPEG program stream format, but with additional limitations
and specifications in the private streams. The DVD specification supports
disks with capacities of from 4.7GB to 17GB and access rates of 600KBps
to 1.3 MBps. In the case of multiple angles the data is stored interleaved,
and so there's a bitrate penalty leading to a max bitrate of 8 Mbit/s per
angle to compensate for additional seek time. This limit is not cumulative,
so each additional angle can still have up to 8 Mbit/s of bitrate available.
Typically, the data rate for DVD movies ranges from 3 Mbit/s to 9.5 Mbit/s,
and the bit rate is usually adaptive. It was first available for retail
around 1997. Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment has created a line of
DVDs (dubbed "Superbit") aiming to maximize picture quality by
eliminating multiple languages, angles, and audio tracks. This allows average
bitrates closer to 6 Mbit/s.
What is WebM?
WebM is an audio-video format designed to provide royalty-free, open video
compression for use with HTML5 video. The project's development is sponsored
by Google Inc. On 19 January 2011, the Free Software Foundation announced
its official support for the WebM project. VP8 is a highly efficient video
compression technology that was developed by On2 Technologies. Google acquired
On2 in February, 2010. For more information, see the -VP8 Video Codec"
section below. Also ST-Ericsson and Huawei have hardware implementations
in their computer chips. MPC-HC as of SVN 2071 and higher builds supports
WebM playback with internal VP8 decoder based on FFmpeg's code. The full
decoding support for WebM is available in MPC-HC since version 1.4.2499.0.
Some video codecs require content distributors and manufacturers to pay
patent royalties to use the intellectual property within the codec. WebM
and the codecs it supports (VP8 video and Vorbis audio) require no royalty
payments of any kind. You can do whatever you want with the WebM code without
owing money to anybody. A WebM file consists of VP8 video and Vorbis audio
streams, in a container based on a profile of Matroska. WebM was built
for the web. By testing hundreds of thousands of videos with widely varying
characteristics, we found that the VP8 video codec delivers high-quality
video while efficiently adapting to varying processing and bandwidth conditions
across a broad range of devices. In January 2011, Google announced that
the WebM Project Team will release plugins for Internet Explorer and Safari
to allow playback of WebM files through the standard HTML5 <video>
tag. As of 9 June 2012, a public preview version of this plug-in is available
for Internet Explorer 9.
