What is WebM?
WebM is an open media file format designed for the web. WebM files consist
of video streams compressed with the VP8 video codec and audio streams
compressed with the Vorbis audio codec. The WebM file structure is based
on the Matroska media container. Google acquired ON2, the original developer
of VP8 technology. VP8 is now an open and free technology. Logitech is
planning to use WebM as part of a video calling service. WebM includes:
VP8, a high-quality video codec we are releasing today under a BSD-style,
royalty-free license; Vorbis, an already open source and broadly implemented
audio codec; a container format based on a subset of the Matroska media
container. MPC-HC as of SVN 2071 and higher builds supports WebM playback
with internal VP8 decoder based on FFmpeg's code. The full decoding support
for WebM is available in MPC-HC since version 1.4.2499.0. A WebM file consists
of VP8 video and Vorbis audio streams, in a container based on a profile
of Matroska. WebM was built for the web. By testing hundreds of thousands
of videos with widely varying characteristics, we found that the VP8 video
codec delivers high-quality video while efficiently adapting to varying
processing and bandwidth conditions across a broad range of devices. VP8's
efficient bandwidth usage will mean lower serving costs for content publishers
and high quality video for end-users. The codec's relative simplicity makes
it easy to integrate into existing environments and requires less manual
tuning to produce high quality results. These existing attributes and the
rapid innovation we expect through the open-development process make VP8
well suited for the unique requirements of video on the web.
What is iPhone?
An Internet-enabled smartphone developed by Apple. The iPhone combines
mobile phone capabilities with a wireless Internet device and an iPod into
one product. The iPhone also includes a 3.5-inch multi-touch screen (4-inch
Retina Display on the iPhone 5), rather than a keyboard, that can be manipulated
by users with by two finger touches. The iPhone runs on a special version
of Apple's Mac OS X operating system. The iPhone is usually sold "locked,"
that is, only able to use the cellular phone service of a specified provider.
Some countries do not allow locked cell phones to be sold, so unlocked
versions are available legally in those areas. In addition, hackers have
been able to unlock the iPhone with limited success for use on unauthorized
networks. Reviews by Gizmodo and TechRadar concluded that although the
redesigned earphones sounded better than its predecessor, the quality of
sound produced is still considered poor. TechRadar further claimed that
the EarPods is inferior to other earphones of a similar price. The iPhone
3G and 3GS are compatible with the same dock, sold separately, but not
the original model's dock. All versions include a USB power adapter, or
"wall charger," which allows the iPhone to charge from an AC
outlet. The iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS sold in North America, Japan, Colombia,
Ecuador, or Peru include an ultracompact USB power adapter. Developers
can also opt to release the application for free and will not pay any costs
to release or distribute the application beyond the membership fee. The
App Store was launched with the release of iOS 2.0, on July 11, 2008. The
update was free for iPhone users; owners of older iPod Touches were required
to pay US$10 for it.
